A Borrowed Light

Moon Monster2

“What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?”- 1 Corinthians 4:7

The moon has no cause to be proud of her light when she borrows it from the sun.”- Thomas Watson, The Godly Man’s Picture, 87.

All Christians are but dark planets and moons, receiving their light, beauty, and luminous quality from the radiance of Christ. But i am still quick to take credit for the graces and fruit i perceive in my soul! How quick i am to take partial credit for any perceived growth in my own heart! This seizure of credit is but a welling up of prideful insurrection against the Kingdom of God within me and a momentary lapse of memory. I have forgotten that the grace i have received is simply that; received. The gift of faith i have to believe in the Christ is simply that; a gift. The given Spirit i have within me to work change in my heart is only that; given. All of the Christian life is a gift. Every ounce of it. From conversion to sanctification and from sanctification to glorification, it is all a gift. Even the power to work hard in pursuing holiness is a gift from God, Himself. Christians receive all of the benefits of the Christian life because they are unified to Christ, Himself. We are lights because He is Light. We shine because He shines. We glow because we reflect the heavenly light He shines upon us, and He shines within us. For this, no good in our lives can be claimed as our own. Our only boast is in the Heavenly Son, who illumines us and transforms us to be reflectors of His light, beauty, and grace to our families, friends, and culture around us.
