My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
How often i am tempted to put my hope and trust in the opinions of others, in my financial state, in my feelings, and in my health! We are tempted to trust in our image and our “worth”, our individuality or our ingenuity. And yet it is a fundamental Gospel truth that the hope of a Christian lies in no other “sweeter frame”, be it money, attractiveness, prosperity, or fame, but only in Jesus. All other frames will fail us and will not deliver on their promises. But Jesus Christ always delivers on His. It is His blood and righteousness, working together, that have provided the believer with ultimate justification. By His blood we are forgiven, and by His righteousness credited to our account, we are counted as having obeyed the Law in its entirety.
When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
And yet believers are everywhere assaulted. From within we experience suffering and turmoil, and our sin is ever at work in us to attempt insurrection. From without, from the world and our Adversary, we experience ridicule, scorn, and persecution. We are faced with the death of loved ones, sickness, natural disasters, hunger, and poverty. Darkness. And yet we hold on to His grace, for He has given us what we do not deserve, and promises to fulfill all that He has promised. In every life circumstance and sin that can enthrall us, our hope stands firm, because we know the Calmer of the Seas, the one to whom every high and stormy gale willingly submits.
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
Jesus’ words to us and His covenant of peace sealed with His very blood are the only foundation of the Christian. When all we see around us is hopelessness and tragedy, Christ remains true, for He has never failed His people. He has never left them.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. -Edward Mote
So through life until the end, when we look upwards at the sound of a bright and clear trumpet, our prayer and only security is that we would be found in Him alone. We will not boast in any of our merits on that day, for all of our merits, even the ones done with the help of the Spirit, have all been tainted with sin. We will only plead Him. We will put Christ forth as our only Righteousness. We will claim nothing but His good works, His death, and His resurrection. And we will stand before the Judge, dressed in Christ. And though our lives were full of thousands and thousands of faults, we will stand faultless because He was faultless for us. We will be acquitted and restored, forever in the family of God, to forever enjoy Him.
We stand with the apostle Paul and declare amongst the Church that God “will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,” (1 Corinthians 1:8-9).
